Embroidery Machine Skipped Stitches - How to Fix It
Skipped stitches leave gaps in your design that are hard to miss. It's one of the most common embroidery machine problems but is almost always caused by one of a handful of things that are straightforward to fix.
Work through these steps in order
Start at step 1 and work your way down - most skipped stitch problems are resolved well before the end.
Check and replace the needle
A dull, bent or wrong needle is the number one cause of skipped stitches in embroidery. It's the quickest thing to check and fix, so always start here.
- Replace the needle with a fresh embroidery needle - not a standard sewing needle
- Make sure it's fully inserted with the flat side to the back and tightened securely
- Change needles every 8-10 hours of embroidery or when switching to a new fabric type
Re-thread the machine from scratch
Incorrect threading is the second most common cause. Even if you've already done it, go through the full process again slowly and carefully, referring to your manual rather than going from memory.
- Raise the presser foot before re-threading so the tension discs open properly
- Follow your machine's threading path step by step, making sure the thread passes through every guide in the correct order
- Re-thread the bobbin too and check it's inserted correctly
Check the thread
Poor quality or old thread can cause skipped stitches as well as breaking.
- Make sure you're using good quality embroidery thread - not standard sewing thread
- Check the thread is flowing freely from the spool with no catching or snagging on the way to the machine
- Check the spool cap is the correct size for your thread
Check thread tension
Tension that's too tight or too loose can both cause skipped stitches - the thread loop needs to form correctly for each stitch to lock.
- Start from your machine's default tension setting
- Adjust gradually in small increments, testing on scrap fabric after each change
Check the hoop
Loose hooping is a very common cause of skipped stitches in embroidery. Any movement in the fabric as the needle comes down can cause it to miss forming a stitch.
- Check the fabric feels taut in the hoop with no give or movement
- Re-hoop carefully if there's any slack - the fabric should feel like a drum
- Make sure the hoop is attached firmly to the machine and isn't shifting during the design
Check your stabiliser
Insufficient stabiliser means the fabric can shift slightly under the needle, which is enough to cause skipped stitches.
- Make sure you're using the right stabiliser type for your fabric
- Check the weight is appropriate for the density of the design - a dense design needs more support
- If in doubt, add an extra layer and test on scrap before returning to your project
Check machine speed
Running the machine too fast, particularly on dense designs or difficult fabrics, can cause the machine to skip stitches.
- Slow the machine down and let it work at a comfortable, steady pace
- This is particularly worth trying with specialty threads like metallics, which need a slower speed to stitch cleanly
Test on scrap fabric
Before returning to your project, run the design on a piece of scrap fabric of the same type. Check carefully for any gaps or skipped stitches before committing to your actual piece.
Quick fix checklist
Run through this before contacting us - it covers the most common causes.
- Fresh embroidery needle fitted, fully inserted and tightened
- Machine fully re-threaded with presser foot raised, referring to the manual
- Good quality embroidery thread in use, not old or degraded
- Thread flowing freely from the spool with no snagging
- Thread tension set to default and adjusted gradually on scrap
- Fabric hooped taut with no give or movement
- Stabiliser appropriate for fabric type and design density
- Machine speed reduced, especially for dense designs or specialty threads
