Needle Threader Not Working - How to Fix It

The needle threader is a brilliantly useful feature but it is also delicate. Most issues are caused by a simple alignment or setup problem - work through these steps and you will be threading smoothly again in no time.

Work through these steps in order

Most needle threader problems come down to one of three things - the needle, its position, or the thread. Start at step 1 and work through.

1

Replace the needle

A bent, dull or incorrectly fitted needle is often the root cause. Starting fresh with a new needle is always the first thing to try.

  • Fit a new needle - even a needle that looks fine can have a very slight bend that throws off the threader
  • Push it all the way up into the needle clamp before tightening the screw - a needle that is not fully seated will misalign with the threader hook
  • Check the needle size - the threader cannot work with size 11 needles or smaller as the eye is too small for the hook to pass through
💡 If you are using a size 11 or smaller needle you will need to thread the needle by hand - the threader simply cannot reach the eye on very fine needles.
2

Position the needle correctly

The threader only works when the needle is in exactly the right position. If the needle is even slightly off, the hook will miss the eye or hit the shank.

  • Use the Needle Up/Down button if your machine has one - this sets the needle to the precise threading position
  • If your machine does not have this button, check your manual for the correct needle position for threading
  • Never try to use the threader when the needle is mid-stitch or in an unknown position
3

Check your thread

The weight and quality of your thread can also cause threader problems, particularly if you are using thick thread with a fine needle.

  • Use good quality thread - brands like Gütermann or Madeira work reliably. Poor quality or old thread can be unpredictable
  • Make sure your thread weight suits your needle size - thick thread through a fine needle strains the hook
  • If you are using a thicker thread, move up to a larger needle size so the hook has room to pass through
🔍

Still not working after these steps?

If the threader is still not functioning after working through the steps above, the hook may be bent or broken - a common result of the hook catching on the needle shank. This will need professional replacement to restore proper function. Please note that the manufacturer's warranty does not cover damage to the needle threader. Quick fix checklist

Run through this before contacting us.

  • Needle is new and pushed fully into the clamp
  • Needle size is 12 or larger - size 11 and below cannot be used with the threader
  • Needle is in the correct threading position (Needle Up/Down button or manual position)
  • Thread weight suits the needle size - no thick thread through fine needles
  • Good quality thread is being used
