Sewing Machine or Overlocker - What’s the Difference?Updated 2 days ago

Sewing Machine or Overlocker - Which Do You Need?

Both are useful tools, but they do very different jobs. Here is a clear breakdown to help you understand the difference and decide which is right for you.

At a glance

Here is how the two machines compare side by side.

🧵 Sewing Machine

The foundation of any sewing setup

  • Sews straight, zigzag and decorative stitches
  • Ideal for general sewing, dressmaking and quilting
  • Creates seams, hems, buttonholes and more
  • Uses 1-2 threads
  • Essential for most sewing projects
  • Many models include a basic overcasting stitch

✂️ Overlocker

The professional finishing machine

  • Finishes and trims seam edges in one step
  • Ideal for garment making and jersey fabrics
  • Creates strong, stretchy, professional seams
  • Uses 3-4 threads simultaneously
  • Cannot sew zips, buttonholes or topstitching
  • Works alongside, not instead of, a sewing machine

A little more detail

Understanding what each machine actually does helps you know which one you need first.

🧵 Sewing Machine

A sewing machine is the starting point for almost every sewing project. It sews seams, creates buttonholes, hems garments and handles everything from patchwork and dressmaking to curtains and bags.

Many modern machines include an overcasting or overlock stitch which can help neaten raw edges, but this is not the same as a true overlocker. It will not trim the fabric or give the same professional finish.

If you are new to sewing, a sewing machine is where to start.

✂️ Overlocker

An overlocker (also called a serger) sews, trims and finishes a seam edge in a single pass. It uses multiple threads to create a stretchy, durable stitch that is perfect for jersey, knitwear and garment construction.

Overlockers are fast, efficient and give clothes that shop-bought finish, but they cannot replace a sewing machine. They do not sew zips, topstitch, create buttonholes or handle most standard sewing tasks.

Most sewers add an overlocker once they are comfortable with their sewing machine and want to level up their finishing.

💡

Do you need both?

Not straight away and not everyone does. If you are just getting started, a sewing machine is all you need. Many experienced sewers add an overlocker later when they are making garments regularly and want a more professional finish. Used together, they are a powerful combination.

Common questions

A few things customers often ask when comparing the two.

Can an overlocker replace my sewing machine?
No. An overlocker finishes edges and sews stretchy seams beautifully, but it cannot create buttonholes, insert zips, topstitch or handle most standard sewing tasks. You will always need a sewing machine as your main tool.
My sewing machine has an overlock stitch - is that the same thing?
Not quite. Many sewing machines include an overcasting or overlock-style stitch that can neaten raw edges, which is useful and better than nothing. However, it does not trim the fabric as it sews and will not give the same strong, stretchy, professional finish as a true overlocker.
Which should I buy first?
Always start with a sewing machine. It is the most versatile tool and will handle the vast majority of projects. Once you are sewing regularly and making garments, an overlocker is a brilliant addition, but it is not where most people need to begin.
Are overlockers difficult to use?
Threading an overlocker takes a little practice, but once set up, they are very satisfying to use. Modern overlockers like the baby lock range use air-threading technology, which makes the process much quicker and easier. Our team are always happy to walk you through it.
Do you offer finance on overlockers?
Yes, flexible payment options including 0% interest finance are available on overlockers just as they are on sewing machines. See our finance options page for full details.

Still not sure which is right for you?

Our team know both ranges inside out and are happy to talk you through the options.
