What to look for in a beginner machine

You do not need lots of features to get started, but a few key things will make learning much easier.

🎯 Ease of use

Look for clear controls, good threading guides and an intuitive layout so you are not constantly consulting the manual when you want to sew.

🔧 Build quality

A well-built machine handles different fabrics without frustrating you and will last for years. It is worth spending a little more to get something solid.

🌱 Room to grow

Think about where your sewing might take you. A machine with more features gives you space to develop your skills without needing to upgrade too soon.

🛡️ Support & warranty

Knowing you can get help if something goes wrong makes a big difference, especially when you are learning. Our machines come with at least a 2-year warranty.

Common questions

Some of the things customers ask us most often about beginner machines.

How much should I spend on my first sewing machine?
For a reliable machine that handles a good range of fabrics and projects, expect to spend between £150 and £400. Going too low can mean frustration - skipped stitches, jamming and limited features. The machines we recommend above, all represent excellent value at their price points.
Should I choose a mechanical or computerised machine?
Both are good for beginners. Mechanical machines use dials and are wonderfully intuitive, great if you want something simple. Computerised machines have digital controls and more stitch options and are often just as easy to use. If you think you will want to grow quickly, a computerised model like the Brother SH40 gives you more to explore.
Do I need lots of stitches as a beginner?
Not really. You will use straight stitch and zigzag for the vast majority of projects. A machine with 20–40 stitches is plenty to get started. What matters more is ease of use and build quality.
Can I use a beginner machine for dressmaking?
Yes, all three machines we recommend above are well-suited to dressmaking. They handle a variety of fabrics including cotton, jersey and light denim and include the key features you need like free arm, stretch stitches and adjustable settings.
Do your machines come with a warranty?
Yes. All new machines we stock come with at least a 2-year manufacturer's warranty. Janome offers extended warranty options 30 days after purchase. Our in-house team also provides full after-sales support, including servicing and repairs. View our Sewing Machine Warranty page for detailed information by brand.
